On the 24th of July, SERIALL arrived in Karosta, a neighborhood of the city of Liepaja located on the west coast of Latvia. In latvian language, Kara-Osta means "harbour of war". Created by the russian tsar in the beginning of the XXth century, this place has been a military zone, forbidden area for the public until the fall of the Soviet Union and its departure of Latvia in 1994. Since 2000, few of the buildings have been transformed into an artistic and cultural center, K@2, wich provides exhibitions and workshops to the local people and residency for artist from all over the world.

The main project that we realized in Karosta during our 3 weeks residency was the transformation of a touristic map of the area by printing over it. We added 3 new layers of ink on each side of it. On the front a big grey square is masking the former forbidden area of Karosta, but people can scratch it away to uncover the parts they want to see. On the back side we covered all the advertisements and replaced them by some meaningful graphic elements, related to our wandering experience of the place.
180 maps were produced in that way and let to the touristic office and hostels in order to give the opportunity to the visitors to discover some hidden part of this really special location.
